                  First Grade

                  2/20 - 2/23

What we are learning this week in First Grade

                  Sight Words:

kind, knew, house, friends, far, by

                  Phonics Skills:

Long /e/ sound (eat, read, feel, seal)

                  Reading Skills:

Readers are working on the following things this week:

                  1.       Nonfiction readers tackle tricky words by remembering that they may know the word even if they haven’t seen it before.  They
use the illustrations and the parts of the word to help them make a good guess.

                  2.       Readers react to the information they read.  They may say, “Wow”, “cool”, or “disgusting” and explain why they react that way.

                  3.       Reading partners can help each other understand the information they are reading by asking questions like, “Can you tell me
what you’ve learned from the book?  What does that mean?  Show me in your book where you learned that and/or give me an
                            example”

                  4.       Nonfiction readers know that they can use the photos and illustrations on the page to help them figure out tricky words by
searching the picture and saying aloud what they see.  They can use the words they say to help them figure out the tricky word.

                  Math:

Students are working on shape patterns (finishing them and stating what type they are – AAB, AB, ABB, ABC, etc.)

                  Writing:

Writers are working on the following things this week:
Writers are continuing to study the author, Ezra Keats and adding some of his style to their own writing.

Many of Mrs. Leverone's students earned the title "Student of Excellence" for receiving 5 "E's" in their agendas. If a student earns an "E," their behavior was excellent that day.

                  Third Grade

Estuaries- Where the River Meets the Sea

In third grade our Marine Science focus is the Estuary. This year we will be exploring Florida's Estuaries through hands on projects, study trips, literature, and classroom experiments. Estuaries will be integrated throughout all subject areas including Spanish. We will also be preparing our students for the upcoming Third Grade FCAT. There will be more information to come regarding the FCAT.

Please check your student's agenda book daily for classroom updates. We will also be updating this page as the year progresses. We look forward to working together with you and your third grader!

                  Fourth Grade

Join our fantastic fourth grade family!

Come splash into the open ocean with the fourth grade team as we discover Florida's past. We begin the year as archaeologists excavating for fossils. Are you digging it? We are! We practice our skills as an archeologist by making fossil creations and performing an in-class excavation. We dive under the sea exploring underwater archeology and sea life. The students contribute their own items to observe the effects of fresh and salt water on artifacts over time. As the school year progresses, we continue to study each level of the ocean until we have reached all of the mysterious fathoms below.

The fourth grade teaching team understands the importance of student centered learning and parent involvement. It is imperative that teachers, students, and parents work as a team to ensure that every student meets expectations in all subject areas. Students will spend one hour each day learning to develop their writing during writers' workshop. Students will have the opportunity to write throughout the day as it will be integrated into all subject areas. This will ensure their success on the state writing assessment in February. We look forward to seeing your children mature as successful lifelong learners.
